What stops when the power does?
A generator is only one possible answer. First trace every critical job that depends on electricity, then decide how long each can safely wait.

Trace the chain, not the appliance
Start with outcomes: people have safe drinking water, animals can drink, medications remain at a safe temperature, buildings do not freeze, food is protected, and someone can receive warnings. Work backward to the equipment and fuel each outcome needs.

Size the response after the map
List starting watts, running watts, fuel storage constraints, safe connection method and who can operate the system. Never run a portable generator indoors or in a garage; follow the manufacturer, electrical code and carbon-monoxide guidance. A licensed electrician can identify a safe transfer arrangement.
University of Minnesota Extension recommends planning for both sheltering in place and evacuation, including backup power, backup fuel and blocked access. That broader plan prevents a generator from becoming the entire strategy.
